Caring for Your Starter Locs

So you finally gained the courage to pull the trigger on starting your loc journey. I'm here to tell you it will be a journey. Some things that may discourage you is the frizz, shrinkage of your hair and what to put in your hair to keep in manageable for you. As you continue on this journey you will learn different things that work for you, but may not work for someone else. I tell all of my clients to do what works for you and not to get caught up in the various social media videos.

Below are a few things that have worked for me and my clients, but again you are free to experiment yourself.

Starter Locs Aftercare Instructions

It is recommended not to use creams, waxes, gel or edge control as they cause buildup in the locs. However there are some ways around this by making sure the first ingredient is water or aqua. You can also do a water test by putting the product in between your thumb and index finger, then lightly rub your fingers together under running water to see how easy the product is removed. If it's easy for the product to rinse off the fingers, I would say it's ok to use, if not don't use.

Do’s:

1. moisturize the hair daily or every other day with the Evolve Daily Moisture Mist.

2. moisture can also be added to the hair just by washing your hair and sealing your locs with oil

3. Oil scalp and lightly oil locs 1-3 times a week

4. Wrap hair with satin/silk scarf or Durag. A satin or silk pillow case will work too.

Note: I find that du-rags are better in the beginning stages as it holds the hair in place better to prevent frizz

When do I return to my Loctician?:

1. Coils: return in 2-3 weeks

2. 2 strand twists or braids: return in 3-4 weeks

3. Interlock startup: return 8-10 weeks or when 1 inch of new growth

Products to use:

1. Evolve Daily Moisture Mist- used for moisture

2. homemade moisture mist of your choosing

3. Oil - used to oil scalp
